Poor Dog That Was Kept On A Short Chain For A Long Time Is Finally Rescued

Many people treat dogs like their own children, but there are also people who treat these gentle animals very badly.

Cala, a guard dog for a mechanic in San Jose, Costa Rica, is one of those unlucky puppies. Her owner kept her chained on a chain so short that she couldn’t rest her head and could barely breathe. When she was sick, the owner would not take her to the vet and rarely fed her. Fortunately for Cala, her suffering had a positive ending.

Neighbors became concerned about her living conditions and alerted the police and the Territorio de Zaguates animal shelter. When she was finally rescued, Cala had to be treated for emaciation, injuries and malnutrition.

“The photo I first saw of her showed a pitiful creature robbed of her dignity and ready to give up – a dog whose spirit had been broken and who was just waiting for the end to live out an endless nightmare.” Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, said.

She described the healing process as slow, “the humans around her still had to cause her pain through the healing of her wounds, especially the gash in her neck caused by years of hanging from a tight metal chain around her neck.”

Even after she was rescued, Cala suffered further abuse from humans. In June, people broke into the sanctuary to try to kill some of the dogs with poisoned sausages.

While 16 of the dogs died, this tenacious pup survived. Battle says that was likely due in part to her size, and although she suffered neurological problems, Cala has recovered.

Today, Cala lives with a loving family and has learned to get along with humans and new dogs.

“After years of neglect, torture, and imprisonment, Cala seems to be shedding all her bad puppy behaviors and we all think that’s great. She is happy, strong, strong-willed, a little stubborn, and spoiled by her foster mom and family,” Battle said, adding, “This rescue is an epic battle of good versus evil and hate versus love, and in the end, as always, love wins.
