A heroic rescuer comes to the rescue of a small dog lost at sea.

A California rescuer came to the aid of a panicked Bichon Frise who was in danger of drowning in the sea.

The sweet dog, named Tofu, had escaped from his family’s yard and was spotted by a good Samaritan, running loose in a parking lot before diving into the ocean and swimming out to sea.

Rescuers from the Long Beach Fire Department’s Marine Safety Division were alerted and, using their binoculars, were able to see a small dog floating in the cold water.

Chase McColl, one of the Long Beach lifeguards, grabbed his surfboard and began paddling to Tofu. He made it to Tofu as the sun was setting, grabbed her and put her on the board.

“She swam over to me and I picked her up and held her for a bit,” McColl told The Dodo. “She was cold and tired, but she was also grateful that she didn’t have to swim anymore.

Holding her with one hand, he paddled to shore. As soon as they reached land, he wrapped her in a towel to warm her up.

Back at the station, she makes herself comfortable while they search for her family.

With the help of Animal Care Services, they found Tofu’s father, Jason, who was relieved to be reunited with Tofu!

Jason then met with McColl to personally thank him for saving Tofu.
